The UWIMAA Endowment

Catalyzing and Assuring Future Development

Toward the 2023 celebration of the following milestones:
  • 75th anniversary of The University of the West Indies (The UWI)
  • 33rd anniversary of The UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA)
  • and in honour of 33 founding pioneers (First Medical Class of 1948),
The UWIMAA seeks to mobilize and galvanize alumni support to establish a US $1.5 million endowment.
This new endowment will provide an investment in student scholarships and developmental aid to the faculties. The endowment, welcomes the support of individual donors and Caribbean and international organisations. The funds raised will be administered through established university mechanisms for managing endowments.

A Message From The UWIMAA Endowment Chairman

As our region and the world at large unites to fight COVID-19 and exit this global pandemic, the immense value of our medical graduates is undeniable. The Medical Faculty is the founding faculty of The UWI, and its graduates continue to be the backbone of our region’s health services. We assure the continuity of quality health care for the region by investing today in our future medical practitioners and in the development of The UWI’s Faculties of Medical Sciences.

As we look toward 2023 when The UWI will mark 75 years in service of the region as its premier higher education institution, all the elements have aligned to make this an opportune moment for alumni, Caribbean citizens and our international friends to donate to the UWIMAA endowment. Each gift is a contribution toward the betterment of medical care for the people of the Caribbean.

This endowment will have practical impact by facilitating the introduction of new knowledge; training and practice in new and emerging areas of health; resource development and exchange; mentorship and scholarships – all aimed at stimulating excellence.

The UWIMAA has proven to be an important vehicle for the coming together of our medical graduates to create and share value. Now more than ever we need all our alumni to mobilize and answer the call to give our very best gifts.

I am extremely pleased to oversee the development of the endowment and encourage all our alumni and friends to give generously. Thank you for helping us achieve this significant goal.

Sir George Alleyne
Chancellor Emeritus, UWI & Chairman, UWIMAA Endowment

Our Early Donors

Dr. Edward Doyle Slifer, (Class of 1968)

“We all owe a great deal of gratitude to The UWI for a first-class education and we need to provide support so that others less fortunate can have the same opportunities that we have had. Giving forward is an important part of our responsibilities as alumni of this great institution.”

Dr Farley R. Cleghorn MD, MPH (Class of 1982)

“UWI made me the Caribbean person that I proudly am today; it equipped me to work all over the world and to help make a difference. I am honoured to contribute to an endowment that will ensure other young aspiring medical practitioners also have their chance to make a difference.”

Bringing dreams within reach for children

The underprivileged children do not have access to required financial help and resources needed to live the life of their dreams. We help them with everything they’ll need to live their dreams.
